Sunshine's Top 10 Favorite Films of the Year, So Far...

And with a blink of an eye, the first half of 2017 has passed us by and we are toes deep into July. With that being the case, join me as I tell you my Top 10 favorite movies of 2017 so far...

10. Baywatch

Yup! That’s right! You aren’t reading this list incorrectly. Baywatch is currently my 10th favorite movie of the year. It got slaughtered by fans and critics and I am so confused as to why. It’s the crude, rude, dumb, and over-the-top comedy flick I was expecting. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and is very self aware. I had a blast watching it but my guess is it doesn’t have a chance of being on this list at the end of the year. 7 out of 10

9. Colossal

Colossal was a surprise to me. It seemed to be marketed as a rom-com/sci-fi feature, but takes us down a much darker path into the world of addiction and domestic abuse. This decision added depth to the characters and showed solid performances from Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis. 7 out of 10

8. Wonder Woman

Gal Gadot was perfectly cast in the best DC movie since The Dark Knight Trilogy. Patty Jenkins made some incredibly wise choices in the action sequences and the entire ensemble was top notch. I thought it dragged in parts of its 141 minute runtime and the villains to me were lackluster, but overall the film delivers. 7 out of 10

7. I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore

I couldn’t take my eyes off of this dark comedy from Netflix. Macon Blair gave us a crime drama that was gory, absurd, and engaging. It’s a bit of a slow burn but paces itself well and I really dug the performances from Melanie Lynskey and Elijah Wood. 8 out of 10

6. Logan

Hugh Jackman breathes so much life into this character and the R rating really allowed Logan to stretch it’s legs from an action standpoint. Nothing feels forced performance wise and it looks beautiful from start to finish. 8 out of 10

5. Beauty and The Beast

Honestly, I’m surprised that I have this one up here as high as I do but this one stuck with me after I left the theater. It is downright magical. I thought everyone was perfectly cast and it had me tearing up. The only complaint I have lies in the overproduction of some of the vocals throughout the musical numbers but other than that, I thought it was fabulous. 8 out of 10

4. RAW

Some could argue that the plot is a bit of a stretch, but this I think this foreign horror film flat out delivers. The horror lies in the imagery. You rarely see acts of violence in this cannibal tale but you normally catch the aftermath, which is terrifying. 8 out of 10

3. Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2

There is arguably more heart in this Marvel movie than any one prior. I enjoyed the action sequences and well-timed wit, but what really makes this movie thrive is the ensemble performances. To develop so many characters in such a small window of time is impressive and Baby Groot was too damn adorable in the opening credit sequence. 9 out of 10

2. Baby Driver

Edgar Wright is back and better than ever. The attention to detail is what separates Wright from other working directors. Every second and every frame shows that every decision made in the film was intentional. So many stellar long takes, a kick ass soundtrack specifically lined up to every action, and a collection of all-stars helps to push Baby Driver into the upper echelon. 10 out of 10

1. Get Out

Poster-2017-Get-Out.jpg

This is an intelligent and well crafted horror movie that I believe perfectly reflects the world in which it was created. Each actor portrayed their role beautifully and the haunting tone throughout was perfectly constructed. This will be a debut that will be tough to top for Jordan Peele but I am incredibly excited to see what he comes up with next. I fully believe that this is going to be a movie that will continue to be talked about in the cinematic world for a long time. Not only is it a phenomenal horror movie, but it helped to push forward the conversation of race relations in our country. It is hands down my favorite of the year so far. 10 out of 10.

There you have it! My top 10 favorite movies of 2017 so far. I expect half of these, if not more to hit the cutting room floor before my list is finalized at the end of the year but for now, it’ll have to do.
